APPRAISER COMMENTS:

This is a wonderful piece, a Chinese porcelain vase measuring 23.5” tall. The vase features a hand painted battle scene over an ivory glaze and two attached figure heads. It is in excellent condition. There is a mark on the bottom that is very interesting. It appears to be raised enamel, which is very rare. Such raised marks have been reproduced as fakes, but only long after this vase was in the hands of its current owner. While we can’t give you an exact age of this vase, we can narrow it down considerably from this mark. We believe it was produced between 1662 and 1722, which was during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. We know this because the marks from every other period before and since have the reign title of the Emperor during which period the piece was made. An exception to the rule was made during particular period of time when marks with symbols and characters other then the reign title became common. The characters are often the name of the place the piece seems to have been made for. These are called "Hall marks". Since we were unable to match the mark to any reign title, we believe this is indeed a Hall mark. Based on comparative data for other vases of this time period recently sold, and considering the similarities and differences for the condition, size, artistic merit, and age, we have valued the subject vase as follows:

Item/Title:one of a kind Chinese battle scene.
Date/Period of Manufacture:Estimated to be over 300 years old. Age surface cracks about 1/8 inch in diameter completely cover (inside and out) the ivory base coloring of the vase. Enameled figures in varous colors do not exhibit these age cracks.
Condition:Excellent
Manufacturer/Artist/Author:I hope you tell me. I haven't attributed the artist's mark yet.
Dimensions (HxWxD):23 1/2 inches high, 7 1/2 inch diameter at top, 10 inch diameter at widest point, 7 inch diameter at base, 20 pounds.
Inscription:Maker's "Hanko" or "Chop" mark on the bottom
History/Provenance:Purchased by my wife's parents when they were living in China about 1910-1915. Was said to be over 200 years old at the time.
